Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your journey in establishing your organization? What inspired you?

My name is Courtney Gilbert and I am a native of Cuthbert, Georgia. I am the proud mom of two children, Caleb and Caleigh Murphy. I graduated in 1996 from Randolph-Clay High School in Coleman, Ga. As a high school student, my goal was to become a Special Education teacher. I received my Bachelor of Science degree in Special Education from Albany State University in 2001. In 2010, I received my master’s degree in Special Education. In 2023, I went on to receive my Educational Specialist Degree in Special Education from Columbus State University. During this time, I have spent 24 years teaching in public education in the field of Special Education. While gaining first-hand knowledge and building relationships with families in schools and the community, I realized the need for resources in rural areas. I began giving back to the community by sponsoring events for individuals with disabilities. The very first event was held in December of 2012. Two years ago, the journey expanded with a name, mission, and vision. My inspiration has been having the opportunity to teach students with disabilities daily. Ranging from ages 5-21 they have all inspired me to go beyond the normal call of duty.

Can you provide an overview of your organization, including the services you offer?

Project Kindness EMG is a nonprofit organization that provides monthly events, community outings, parent informational workshops, and group respite care events for individuals with disabilities ages 3-21. The events were all sponsored by businesses, family, and friends. Project Kindness, EMG has held the following yearly events: Going Green with Learning, Summer Reading Program at the local library, Autism Awareness, Falling into October, Parent Workshops, and our yearly December Project. At all events, our goal is to communicate, show love, spread kindness, and educate while having a blast while not focusing on the limitations but on the abilities of all.

How do your personal values align with the mission and vision of your organization?

I believe that service to all matters. I believe that everyone should be given opportunities to become independent. Project Kindness EMG strives to help all to be as independent as possible.

How has the organization evolved since its inception, in terms of its mission, scope of services, and impact?

Project Kindness EMG is in its growing phase. We went from one event a year and now we are sponsoring up to five throughout the year. As the journey continues so does our passion for serving individuals with disabilities. Project Kindness EMG was born out of the need to provide resources to support families in rural areas. The mission is to educate and provide opportunities for individuals with disabilities by providing real-life experiences that will enable them to be independent in their community. The vision is to help bridge the gap by spreading awareness while building relationships among families and the community environment.

As Project Kindness, EMG is still in the development stage. While we are still growing, we are taking small steps towards our mission and vision as we are building relationships with families. I am very thankful for all the support via volunteers, well wishes, and monetary donations that helped to support the vision of Project Kindness, EMG.
